Whether you’re a first-time homeowner, a long-time DIY enthusiast, or just someone who wants to be prepared for life’s little emergencies, having the right tools can make all the difference. You don’t need a massive workshop to handle basic repairs and maintenance, just a solid set of essentials. Here’s a breakdown of the 10 must-have tools every home should have.
1. Hammer
A classic claw hammer is perfect for driving nails, assembling furniture, and making small home repairs. Look for one with a comfortable grip to reduce hand fatigue. Irwin is a brand that's been around for forever and has proven reliability.
2. Screwdriver Set
A set that includes both flathead and Phillips head screwdrivers in various sizes will cover most household needs, from tightening loose cabinet handles to replacing outlet covers. The set in that link I have personally owned for two plus years. You will not be disappointed.
3. Tape Measure
A 25-foot tape measure is a must for projects like hanging pictures, measuring furniture, or planning room layouts. Choose one with a locking mechanism for accuracy. This Stanley tape is one of the best you will ever own. It's accurate, strong, and is well worth the 20 bucks. compared to how long it will last you.
4. Adjustable Wrench
This versatile tool works for tightening or loosening nuts and bolts of various sizes, making it a handy alternative to a full wrench set. As long as you're not buying something super cheap like Pittsburg, decent Adjustable Wrenches are easy to come by. I use Craftsman and Here's a 3 Piece set that I have gotten plenty of value out of.
5. Utility Knife
Perfect for opening boxes, trimming materials, or scraping paint. Choose one with a retractable blade for safety. If you're looking for something to get the job done, simplicity, and reliability, get this Irwin Utility Knife. It's not very visually pleasing or fancy at all, but it will outlast most others. At this price, it's well worth it.
6. Level
A level ensures shelves, frames, and fixtures are straight. Even a small 9-inch version can save you from crooked disasters. I have this Johnson Level I bought from Lowes. The trade name is a "torpedo" level. You may think you won't need one, but they come in handy once you do. This one has rare earth magnets instead of the traditional weak magnet strips on levels.
7. Pliers
A pair of slip-joint pliers can grip, bend, and twist materials. They’re especially helpful for plumbing fixes and general repairs. Save yourself the headache and go ahead and get these Channellock Pliers. This is a 3 piece set with a 12", 9.5", and 6.5" set. These will last you a lifetime, if you take care of them. Getting a little rusty? toss them in a bucket of vinegar for a day or two.
8. Cordless Drill
A cordless drill with a variety of drill bits can speed up almost any project, from hanging shelves to assembling furniture. Look for one with rechargeable batteries and variable speed settings. For budgets sake, I'm going to recommend this Craftsman set which includes a driver and an impact (this is plenty for normal use), I highly recommend if you have the money though to upgrade to the brushless models for more than normal use. If you enjoy doing home improvement projects or DIY projects often the brushless is a better choice overall. The charge lasts longer, they are stronger, the tool itself will last longer as well. This is usually the case regardless of the brand.
9. Flashlight
Power outages happen. A bright, durable flashlight (or two) ensures you can see and work in low-light conditions. Consider a rechargeable LED model for convenience. Since I already use Craftsman power tools, I am recommending one of the lights they make, the CRAFTSMAN V20 LED Work Light. this has made many jobs easier. When I found myself in a pinch, I can always just pop a battery in, and boom. Let there be light.
10. Stud Finder
When hanging heavy items like TVs, mirrors, or shelves, a stud finder helps you locate wall studs for secure mounting—saving you from damaging drywall or having your project come crashing down. Let me put you on something. The StudBuddy Magnetic Stud Finder Tool is one of those tools you buy once and never again. It's such a simple but useful tool that only uses magnets.
